PUTNEY RESIDENTS WITHOUT BROADBAND SERVICE HOPE TO CONFRONT GOVERNOR AT TOWN MEETING

APPROXIMATELY 300 RESIDENTS OF GOVERNOR PETER SHUMLIN’S HOME TOWN OF PUTNEY, VERMONT, STILL LACK HIGH SPEED BROADBAND, DESPITE PROMISES BY THE GOVERNOR TO “GET HIGH SPEED INTERNET TO EVERY LAST MILE IN THIS GREAT STATE BY THE END OF 2013 ! ” GOV. SHUMLIN CONTINUED, “I’M GONNA DELIVER ON THAT PROMISE ! PERIOD ! NO QUESTIONS ASKED !!” (from a BCTV-Brattleboro Community Television- video of the Governor’s remarks to his local Putney, VT, Town Meeting, March 5, 2013 ).

PUTNEY TOWN RESIDENTS WHO STILL LACK (HARD-WIRED) BROADBAND WILL BE REGISTERING THEIR FRUSTRATION AND ANGER WITH THE GOVERNOR’S BROKEN PROMISES AT THIS TUESDAY’S ANNUAL TOWN MEETING, MARCH 4th, AT THE PUTNEY CENTRAL SCHOOL, 182 WESTMINSTER ROAD, PUTNEY, VERMONT, 05346, BEGINNING AT10:00 AM.

TRADITIONALLY, GOV. SHUMLIN, WHO HEADS THE NATIONAL DEMOCRATIC GOVERNOR’S ASSOCIATION, ATTENDS HIS LOCAL TOWN MEETING, TO GIVE LOCAL RESIDENTS AN UPDATE ON HIS ACCOMPLISHMENTS AS WELL AS HIS VISION FOR THE FUTURE.

LOCAL RESIDENTS HOPE TO ENGAGE GOV. SHUMLIN, AND HOLD HIM ACCOUNTABLE FOR KEEPING HIS PROMISE. RESIDENTS PLAN TO INTRODUCE A RESOLUTION ADVISING THEIR LOCAL SELECTBOARD TO INSIST THAT LOCAL LEGISLATIVE REPRESENTATIVES AND THE GOVERNOR CARRY THROUGH IMMEDIATELY WITH SHUMLIN’S PROMISE TO GET AFFORDABLE, HIGH-SPEED BROADBAND TO EVERY RESIDENT IN THE TOWN, AS WELL ACROSS THE STATE.

MANY RESIDENTS ARE DISPLEASED WITH THE STATE’S MOST RECENT SUBSTITUTE PLAN OF BRINGING “WIRELESS-DATA-INTERNET” SERVICE TO THOSE WHO STILL ARE NOT CONNECTED TO FIBER OPTIC OR DSL CABLE. RESIDENTS POINT OUT THAT THIS SO-CALLED WIRELESS INTERNET CANNOT COMPETE WITH “HARD-WIRED” BROADBAND, SINCE IT IS MORE EXPENSIVE, AND IS A “METERED” SERVICE, IE. IT HAS STRINGENT DOWNLOAD LIMITS, WHICH, ONCE EXCEEDED,TRIGGER SIGNIFICANT UPCHARGES ON THE USER’S MONTHLY BILL. ADDITIONALLY, RESIDENTS HAVE POINTED OUT THAT WIRELESS SERVICE IS UNRELIABLE AND OFTEN SHUTS OFF, DUE TO BAD WEATHER OR EVEN SEASONAL CHANGES (EG, TREES LEAFING OUT IN THE SPRING.)
