The Honorable Peter E. Shumlin
Governor, State of Vermont
109 State Street, Pavilion
Montpelier, Vermont 05609
Dear Governor Shumlin,
I am writing to express my concern regarding your statements yesterday in Boston to the group Physicians for a National Health Program.
Of particular concern is what could be perceived as your intent to strip Medicare coverage from Vermont’s seniors and Tricare medical coverage from our veterans.
When responding to a question about the complications that could be presented by having Medicare, Tricare, and your government run, taxpayer financed health care plan co-exist in our state, you are reported by SinglePayerAction.org to have said: “…I’m going to try to get the waivers and get everybody [in Vermont] in the [single payer] pool – everybody. I want everybody in the pool.”
Governor, some will interpret that as an expression of your intent to kick Vermont’s senior citizens off of Medicare and to disallow Vermont’s honored veterans from continuing their health care coverage through Tricare. It could also be inferred from your comments that it is your intent to strip those who are self-insured and those otherwise covered in plans that are the jurisdiction of ERISA of their current health care plans.
The Vermont Republican Party respectfully requests that you clarify your intent with regard to your proposed health care plans and its potential impact to our state’s seniors and veterans. We also ask that you clarify how your statement yesterday applies to those who are self-insured and would like to stay that way. If Vermont’s seniors and veterans like their plans, will they be able to keep them?
The Vermont Republican Party stands ready to defend our seniors and veterans against any takeover of the federal healthcare plans they currently have and enjoy.
We once again urge you to release the details of your plans for Vermont’s healthcare system. Vermonters deserve to know what their coverage will be, what will be provided, who will be covered, how much it will cost, and how Vermonters will be asked to pay for it.
I look forward to your response on this important matter.
David A. Sunderland
Chair, Vermont Republican Party
