BARRE CITY GOP STATEMENT ON RECOMMENDATIONS FOR FILLING VACANT BARRE CITY HOUSE SEAT

Barre City, VT – Today, the Barre City Republican Committee submitted two names to Governor Peter Shumlin for consideration in filling the House of Representatives seat vacated by the resignation of Rep. Tess Taylor.  They are John Santorello and Kristin Sohlstrom.  While we wish Rep. Taylor the best in her new endeavors, her resignation presents Governor Shumlin with a unique opportunity to change course, begin the process of restoring balance to our state government, and start moving Vermont toward economic security and prosperity.

Both of the names recommended by the committee are Vermonters who are listening to — and hearing from — Barre City residents. They are hearing concerns from their community about the condition of our state’s economy.  They understand that Vermonters are worried about the painfully slow recovery of our economy and the seemingly endless stream of job losses reported recently across our state.  These individuals are ready to engage with the legislature and make a difference in Vermont’s economy from their first day in office.

As they listen to their neighbors, they are also hearing deep concerns about the affordability of their community and their state.  With property tax rates that steadily increase faster than their paychecks, energy costs that are rising at an unsustainable rate, and the threat of enormous healthcare taxes on the horizon, Barre City residents are ready for new ideas and a new direction.  The two individuals recommended by the committee are committed to holding the line on new taxes and to addressing Vermont’s crisis of affordability head on.

The Barre City Republican Committee strongly encourages Governor Shumlin to use this opportunity to turn away from the failed policies of the past — bigger government, higher taxes, and less government accountability — and to begin setting our state on a new track toward a brighter, more balanced, and more affordable future for all Vermonters.  He can do that by selecting one of these well qualified and capable individuals for the Vermont House of Representatives.

Dear Governor Shumlin,

As Chair of the Barre City Republican Committee I am forwarding the names below for your consideration as a replacement for Representative Tess Taylor who recently resigned her House seat for the City of Barre.

Kristin Sohlstrom has served in several capacities in Barre City. She is presently the Chair of the Board of Civil Authority and is the past Chair of the Barre City Semprebon Committee.  She has been both appointed by Governor Shumlin, and then elected, as a Justice of the Peace; she is presently the elected Treasurer of the Barre City Republican Committee; Kristin was a 2010 candidate for VT House of Representatives for District 3-2.

John Santorello is a retired 30 year State Employee.  He served two terms on the Spaulding HS/Barre Technical Center School Board, chairing one term; he served on Barre Finance Committee, is past Chair of the Barre City Republican Committee. John been elected twice as a Justice of the Peace in Barre.  He has served two terms as the Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus, and was a member of the Board of Directors Montpelier Children’s Museum Investigatory Board.  John was a 2012 candidate for VT House of Representatives for the City of Barre.

Both of the above candidates have proven their leadership capabilities and would be an excellent choice to replace former Representative Tess Taylor and both meet the Constitutional requirements for eligibility to be a House representative.

If you have any questions about the above names, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Thank you for your consideration.

Respectfully,

Jackie Barnett, Chair

Barre City Republican Committee
